A. A. Pejović with Thomas Mayr-Harting in EEAS

BRUSSELS – Montenegro’s chief EU negotiator Ambassador Aleksandar Andrija Pejović met in Brussels today with new Managing Director for Europe and Central Asia at the European External Action Service Thomas Mayr-Harting.

The two officials discussed the ongoing and planned activities within Montenegro’s EU accession talks, as well as the topical regional and EU issues.

Ambassador Pejovic presented the reforms undertaken in the rule of law area, in particular in terms of meeting the interim benchmarks for chapters 23 and 24 of the acquis. In addition, the ambassador presented the progress made in six more negotiation chapters and expressed an expectation that those chapters will be opened in 2016.

Mr Mayr-Harting welcomed the progress Montenegro has made in the accession negotiations over the past four years. By implementing core reforms, the EEAS official noted, Montenegro confirms its European perspective and justifies the leading position in the EU accession process.
