cdm logoPODGORICA – The process of translating the acquis communautaire is extremely important because once the European laws will become ours said European Affairs Minister Aleksandar Andrija Pejović on the occasion of completing the project of translating the EU acquis, Montenegrin legislation and documents from the pre-accession process, CdM reports.

Pejović said that this process was time consuming, but that he hoped it would be completed before Montenegro joins the European Union.

“This is a process that takes years. So far we have translated 17,000 pages and we are to start translating additional 30,000 pages. I must point out that this was not the usual translation, but we have to adjust the texts to our understanding. In addition to translators, lawyers have also been involved in the process,” said Pejović.

Head of the EU Delegation to Montenegro Aivo Orav said that every country joining the EU had to adopt European laws.

“That is job for interpreters/translators, because the EU legislation contains more than 160,000 pages. EU laws must be applied in an appropriate manner, so the translation is very important,” said Orav.

Valentina Scekic, a representative of Educo Centre (the agency in charge of the project), said that 50 translators participated in the process.
