Montenegro to open two and close one chapter

BRUSSELS – The eighth EU-Montenegro Stabilisation and Association Council will review the state of relations between the EU and Montenegro, including Montenegro’s progress in its preparations for EU membership. The meeting will be held on June 20 and follows the publication in November 2016 of the Commission’s Montenegro Report, the Stabilisation and Association Committee of December 2016, and the various sub-committees held since the last SA Council meeting.

Concerning relations under the Stabilisation and Association Process, the participants will discuss accession strategy, including the political and economic criteria and bilateral relations under the Stabilisation and Association Agreement.

The European Union and Montenegro representatives will also have an exchange of views regarding developments in the Western Balkans.

The meeting will be followed by an Accession Conference with Montenegro, which is expected to open two negotiation chapters –  1 and 22, and provisionally close one negotiation chapter – 30. Until now, 26 out of 35 negotiating chapters have been opened for negotiations, of which two have already been provisionally closed.
