BRUSSELS – Committee of Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament decided today not to support the candidacy Commissioner-designate for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, asking him to to answer additional questions in writing instead. This happened following a vote in which 30 members of the Committee supported Várhelyi, while 48 opposed his candidacy. According to Politico, MEPs from the Greens, Socialists and Democrats, Renew Europe and the European United Left/Nordic Green Left asked for the extra questions, and the deadline for the answers is not known. The leaders of Renew Europe and the Socialists and Democrats had initially planned on greenlighting Várhelyi’s candidacy but later backtracked, according to several MEPs.
