SKOPJE – Ms Angelina Eichhorst, European External Action Service Director for Western Europe, Western Balkans and Turkey visited Skopje on 9 March 2016. She met with representatives of the Government, the main political parties and representatives of the international community.

In her meetings, Director Eichhorst emphasized the importance of credible elections for the country within the framework of the Przino Agreement in which the parties have confirmed their commitment to the Euro-Atlantic process and democratic principles. Whilst the preparations for early elections are ongoing there is a need to complete the revision of the Voters’ list and other preparatory steps.

She also underlined the need to respect the independence of institutions including in particular the State Election Commission and the Special Prosecutor and to support their important work.

The talks also addressed the need to build greater trust between communities and to avoid adding inter-ethnic tensions due to the use of symbols, in an already tense political environment.
