Statement of EU Delegation to Albania

“The European Union takes good note of (yesterday’s) Albania’s Constitutional Court ruling declaring the vetting law in line with the Albanian constitution.

The EU encourages the Albanian authorities to start swiftly with the implementation of the evaluation of judges and prosecutors. This is essential for the advancement of Albania’s EU-accession process and long awaited by the Albanian citizens.

The European Commission will support Albania in conducting a thorough and credible vetting process by leading the International Monitoring Operation”. (End of statement)

EWB reminds that Albania’s Constitutional Court rejected a request by the main opposition Democratic Party to nullify the vetting law, drafted together with EU and U.S. experts requiring checks on the personal and professional backgrounds of judges and prosecutors.
