BRUSSELS – The EU needs Serbia as the region’s leading force, says European Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn, adding that, under PM Aleksandar Vucic’s leadership, the country has made good progress toward its strategic goal of EU membership. It is implementing an ambitious economic and structural reform agenda that has already produced results, demonstrating a commitment to regional cooperation – including on an EU agenda for connecting the region, which we intend to encourage further at the Trieste summit in July, Hahn told Tanjug in an exclusive interview.

The hard work has paid off as Serbia has opened eight and closed two chapters in the accession talks, he said.

I know citizens in Serbia may be impatient or think this is not going fast enough, however, the pace of the talks is in Serbia’s hands and the conditions are clear and unchanged, Hahn said.
