Meta, Yee: Boycott does not lead to way-out

ata_maliTIRANA – Speaker of the Albanian Parliament Ilir Meta hosted on Monday Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, responsible for U.S. relations with the countries of Central Europe and South Central Europe, Hoyt Brian Yee, who was accompanied by the EU ambassador to Albania, Donald Lu, ATA reports.


Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta expressed his gratitude for the ongoing support of the US for the strengthening of Albania’s democratic institutions putting the emphasis on importance of deepening this strategic partnership in the interest of justice reform and European integration process.

Deputy Assistant Secretary, Hoyt Brian Yee, congratulated Meta on his election as President of the Republic and pointed out that the US will support Albania in the efforts to consolidate democracy, crack down on corruption and organized crime.

With regard to latest political developments in the country, Parliament Speaker Meta pointed out that conduct of free and fair elections requires more accountability and inclusion.

“Boycott is not the way out and opposition should summon up the energy to get involved in the electoral process, to serve democracy and the country’s European future. On the other hand, the majority should demonstrate maximum commitment to include the opposition as well as meet its demands and respect its rights,” Meta said.

Parliament Speaker concluded saying: Inclusion and constructive dialogue are crucial in speeding up the European integration, in reinforcing the rule of law, implementing justice reform and guaranteeing legitimacy of the country’s institutions .
