Fleckenstein: EU should open accession negotiations with Albania

TIRANA –  The conditions for opening Albania’s negotiations with the European Union are already fulfilled, the European Parliament’s Rapporteur on Albania, MEP, Knut Fleckenstein stated.

During his speech at the European Parliament, MEP, Knut Fleckenstein has called on member states to open negotiations with Tirana, pointing out that Albania has made considerable progress on the rule of law and the country is heading in the right direction, according to the media report.

The appeal to the European Union countries comes a few days before the important decision on whether to open the EU accession negotiations with Albania.

Regarding the visa liberalization for Kosovo, Fleckenstein stressed that “… we must not forget that the criteria for visa liberalization have already been met”.

The German MEP also demanded the opening of negotiations with Macedonia and noted progress specifically in the case of Montenegro and the Republic of Serbia underlining that “… we must send a clear signal to the Western Balkans concerning our approach to this region.”
