What is behind the recent escalation of Serbian protests?

Serbia erupted last week as anti-government protests turned violent. As citizens gather daily across the country, the authorities promise an unprecedented crackdown.

Last week in Serbia, a new phase of anti-government protests began, marked by incidents and clashes between protesters and masked, armed members of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). While police have been detaining and beating citizens and students, SNS members remain largely unsanctioned.

In response to the police brutality and attacks by organised SNS supporters, citizens vandalised and set fire to several SNS offices in cities across Serbia, including in Belgrade and Novi Sad.
