Serbian government accused of effectively preventing thousands of citizens from voting abroad

The Republic Electoral Commission of Serbia adopted a decision on Sunday evening designating polling stations for voters residing abroad. Representatives of the Student List, the main opposition force in Serbia, strongly criticised the decision, claiming that it leaves tens of thousands of voters without an effective opportunity to vote due to the insufficient number of polling stations.

Citizens of Serbia residing abroad can only vote on election day, primarily at Serbian diplomatic and consular offices. There is no postal voting, and citizens must actively register in advance to vote from abroad.

These rules have resulted in a limited number of citizens voting from abroad in previous elections. In the 2023 parliamentary election, only about 33,000 citizens voted from abroad, accounting for less than 1% of the electorate.
