Serbia expects chapters to open by end-year

BELGRADE, 31.03.2015. – Head of the negotiating team in Serbia’s EU accession talks Tanja Miscevic stated on Tuesday that Serbia is well-prepared for the negotiations and hopes that certain chapters in the EU accession talks would be opened by the end of the year.

Miscevic told the conference “Serbia on the path of European integration – the screening and after the screening” that whatever the political decision of EU member countries may be, we are preparing to ensure that all we do provides technical support to the entire process of the negotiations so that we could change the state here for our sake.

She noted that the screening completed last week constitutes only the first stage in the membership talks and added that it has presented a clear image of Serbia today and its strategic steps in the future.

This is the beginning of very serious work and Serbia expects help from the EU on the path, Miscevic said.

Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport said that the EU was strongly committed to enlargement that would include the countries of the Western Balkans.

Serbia as a candidate country should show it is actively committed to the European integration process more than before, Davenport said.

There is a strong willingness to continue EU enlargement in the countries of this region and we must all be prepared for other signals coming from the EU over the next two to three years, as the majority in the European Parliament is in favour of enlargement, Davenport said.
