BELGRADE, 28.09.2015 – Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport described on Monday as very positive the fact that the border between Croatia and Serbia had been opened, underscoring that open borders were a foundation for good relations.
It is my stance that there should be no closing of borders between Serbia and EU member states, as open borders are a foundation for our relations, free trade and free movement of citizens, Davenport told reporters.
He added that it was the time to enter a new phase, in that context, and that every next step should be proportionate, in line with the laws and international obligations.
After the several-day blockade, introduced because of the surge in the number of refugees from the Middle East wishing to enter the country, Croatia opened the main border crossings with Serbia for kinds of traffic on September 26.
It did this following Belgrade’s counter-measures and Brussels’ pressure that ensued after Serbia warned the bloc that Croatia’s move constitutes a violation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement and bilateral agreements between the two countries.
