PRISTINA – Albulena Haxhiu has been re-elected Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo today. According to Balkanweb.com, she received 62 votes in favor, while 16 MPs voted against her candidacy.
The constitutive session was chaired by Avni Dehari, whereas the election of the deputy speakers of the Assembly is also on the agenda, the article notes.
Haxhiu’s election comes after a long period of political deadlock, during which the Assembly failed to complete the constitution process within the constitutional deadline. The 30-day deadline expired on 7 August, while the last session was held a day later.
The continuation of the session was called after the agreement reached between the Vetëvendosje (LVV) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) regarding the presidential issue. Leaders of LVV and LDK, Albin Kurti and Lumir Abdixhiku, agreed on former judge of Constitutional Court Bekim Sejdiu as a joint presidential candidate, but the deal faces internal rebellion from six LDK MPs.
Koha ditore reported that MPs of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) placed the emblem of the Kosovo Liberation Army on the floor of the Parliament on the eve of the constitutive session, with a slogan: “the KLA unites us”. This party has linked the constitution of the parliament to the decision of the Special Court for the four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army – Hashim Thaçi, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli and Rexhep Selimi.
