Serbia heads to the polls in closely contested parliamentary election

Serbia votes today in a closely contested parliamentary election, with the ruling Serbian Progressive Party facing a major challenge from the Student List. Follow Serbia Elects for live updates, turnout figures, results and analysis throughout election day and night.

BELGRADE – Serbia votes today to elect 250 members of parliament from 18 candidate lists. Polling stations open at 07:00 and close at 20:00. Anyone waiting to vote at closing time must be allowed to cast their ballot.

A total of 6.451.292 citizens are eligible to vote. At the previous parliamentary election, around 3.8 million people cast their ballots, bringing turnout to approximately 59%. Analysts note that turnout figures are depressed by the large number of registered voters who live abroad.

There are no exit polls in Serbia. Election monitoring organisations CRTA and CeSID are expected to release their first projections after 21:30, based on results from a sample of polling stations. The limited polling available suggests a tight contest between the ruling Serbian Progressive Party and its main challenger, the Student List.
