EU: Albanian government to focus on vetting

Maja Kocijančič

BRUSSELS – The new Albanian government should focus on the judiciary reform implementation, especially on the vetting process, the EU spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Maja Kocijančič explained.

Speaking to Vizion Plus TV, Kocijančič said that the EU also expects from the new government to fight against drugs and to address Albanian asylum-seekers concerns.

“We expect a government that is committed to taking the country forward on the integration path through sustainable reforms. The new government should focus especially on the implementation of reforms in the judiciary and vetting process which is substantial for the fight against organized crime and corruption. The new government should also focus on the fight against drugs trafficking and its cultivation,” said Kocijančič.

Speaking about Durrës meeting of Western Balkans Prime Ministers Kocijančič said that they will discuss the further steps following Trieste Summit and on the action plan on economic regional integration that should yield concrete results and new opportunities for the region.

The vetting process and the reform of the judiciary are due in September when Albania expects to open the EU membership negotiations, which is said to be one of the main challenges of the new government.
