Schinas: EC committed to integration of Western Balkan countries

BRUSSELS – The European integration perspective of Western Balkan countries is there, EC spokesman Margaritis Schinas said in Brussels Monday.

Schinas noted the EC and its President Jean-Claude Juncker were committed to all the countries of the Western Balkans and to all of them “having a European perspective.”

“Of course, we will decide… in the next 8-9 months how to proceed with each and every one of these countries… This is a merit-based process, so the perspective is there, the commitments are there, the willingness is there, the political atmospherics is there,” he said.

EC spokeswoman for the Western Balkans Maja Kocijančič announced the EC would in April release an annual report on the countries’ progress in the integration process.

Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn should present the EU enlargement strategy for the Western Balkans on February 6.
