Merkel: Serbia key Balkan country

Angela Merkel

BERLIN – Serbia is a key Balkan country that Germany is cooperating with closely, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said before a new meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Berlin, which she said was aimed at contributing to finding solutions in the Balkans.

Serbia has a key role in Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina and that is why it is important that we exchange views closely and intensively, Merkel said before the closed-door meeting.

An agreement has been reached to conduct intensive dialogue with Serbia and other countries in the region in the first half of this year as Bulgaria has set the Western Balkans’ EU approximation as the priority of its presidency of the Union, Merkel noted.

She said Serbia-Germany cooperation and development of the Balkans would be the main topics of the meeting with Vucic.

Serbia’s reforms are progressing boldly, she said, adding that this was a compliment to the Serbian PM and her ministers.
