Serbia is entering the autumn of 2026 amid widespread expectations that the country is on the brink of decisive parliamentary elections. While President Aleksandar Vučić has been announcing possible snap elections for some time – announcements that have not materialized – he recently mentioned specific dates for the first time: 18 or 25 October. This implies that the elections would have to be called in the first ten days of September.
The elections are expected to see Vučić, whose second and final presidential term ends in the spring of 2027, run for the position of Prime Minister, aiming to extend the already 14-year-long rule of his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). His main challenger in the election is expected to be a new political actor – a list nominated by the Student movement, which emerged from the massive student protests of 2024-2025.
