SKOPJE – PES Deputy Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck is on an official PES visit to its associate member party SDSM in Skopje. He had meetings with the Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and defence minister and member of PES presidency Radmila Šekerinska.

The PES is constantly supporting SDSM in their efforts to bring the country closer to EU membership, improve democracy and the rule of law.

“We are very satisfied that the democratic logic has finally prevailed allowing the creation of the progressive government led by Zoran Zaev. Their challenge will be to undone the harm made by the Conservatives and Nikola Gruevski in the past but I can see that the atmosphere has dramatically changed already and that Macedonian citizens are more positive about the future of their country” said Giacomo Filibeck.

PES President Sergei Stanishev, Deputy Secretary General Filibeck and officials from the PES and S&D group in the European Parliament made numerous visits to Skopje during the political crisis in the country until the democratic majority led by SDSM was able form a government after the last general election.

The PES commands the efforts of the government led by SDSM to tackle inequalities and its commitment to social cohesion and Euro-Atlantic integration and finds Macedonia is having the chance to be a positive model within the region.
