Catalonia declares independence from Spain

The Catalan parliament has declared independence from Spain following a secret ballot. Seventy Catalan deputies voted for independence, with 10 opposed and two blank ballot slips. The vote was boycotted by opposition members.

Catalonia constituted an independent, sovereign and social democratic state. It called on other countries and institutions to recognise it.
