DUBLIN – The Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union will organise an informal meeting of European Affairs Ministers on 3 and 4 September in Dublin, one of the main topics being EU enlargement. Ministers from nine candidate countries will also join the meeting.
The announcement states that the topics of the meeting will be, among others, Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-34, EU enlargement and bolstering the EU’s democratic resilience
According to the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, in the first working session on 4 September, EU Ministers will be joined by Ministers from nine candidate and potential-candidate countries for discussions on how they can build administrative capacity to facilitate closer alignment with EU accession requirements.
“In the second working session on enlargement, EU Ministers and the Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, will discuss safeguards that may be included in future accession treaties, ahead of a strategic discussion on enlargement expected at the next meeting of the European Council in October”, the Presidency announced.
The announcement assesses that the meeting comes at a critical moment in the EU’s enlargement process, and that the European Affairs Ministers’ informal will focus on how the EU can best support candidate countries and potential candidates in their path towards membership.
