BELGRADE – After the declaration of the first-instance verdict against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army by the Specialized Chambers in the Hague, the European Union called on all sides and actors in Kosovo to exercise restraint.
“The Specialized Chambers and Specialized Prosecutor’s Office must be able to perform their mandate without hindrance. Justice must be allowed to take its course, which is especially important for victims. The authorities have a responsibility to ensure the safety of all communities and residents throughout Kosovo”, European Commission Spokesman Guillaume Mercier said, it was reported by Radio Free Europe.
He stated that the EU took note of the first instance verdict and pointed out that the Specialized Chambers of Kosovo implement justice through fair, impartial and independent judicial proceedings, based on the principle of individual criminal responsibility.
Convicted persons have the right to appeal the verdict before independent appeals judges within the Special Appeals Chamber, Mercier added.
At the same time, the EU recalled its long-standing support to the specialized councils as an institution established by the decisions of the Kosovo Assembly from the period 2014-2015, which operates within the legal system of Kosovo.
“Their work is important for ensuring accountability and providing justice to victims and their families from all Kosovo communities, thus contributing to reconciliation. It remains crucial to promote an environment free from intimidation, fear and retaliation, and to protect victims and witnesses”, Mercier said.
