PRISTINA – Kosovo has six days left to elect a new president and avoid another parliamentary election, Prime Minister Albin Kurti said today, KoSSev reports.
He announced further talks with the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), saying that a joint declaration on the Kosovo Specialist Chambers had made more prospects of an agreement, although he acknowledged there were no guarantees.
As KoSSev reports, Kurti also confirmed that Bekim Sejdiu remains the candidate of Vetëvendosje Movement.
Speaking at the press conference today, Kurti said time was running out before the constitutional deadline and that further talks between political parties were necessary.
“We have only six days left, excluding today”, Kurti said, adding that a failure to elect a president would lead to renewed institutional instability.
The Constitutional Court ruled last week that the deadline for electing a president began running on 8 August and expires on 6 October 2026. If a president is not elected by then, the Assembly will be dissolved and another parliamentary election will follow.
Kurti said today that he believed there was scope for further talks with the PDK and LDK.
“There should be meetings, discussions and agreements,” he said.
He said his optimism also stemmed from the joint declaration on the Specialist Chambers’ first-instance judgment, which the Assembly adopted on Monday with 99 votes in favour.
“I have seen that it is possible. There is a path we can take together, and the 99 votes in favour of the declaration on Monday are clear evidence of that,” he said.
He added that he did not want to conduct talks with the opposition through the media.
“I do not believe we should conduct these discussions through the media. I think we should hold them discreetly, between parties and parliamentary groups, and then announce the results,” he said.
“I am optimistic because I have seen that it is possible. We have both the willingness and the opportunity,” he added.
He added that there are no guarantees, but I have seen the willingness, and we have identified an opportunity”, he said, adding that he expected political talks to continue.
