The Student List (SL), the strongest opposition challenger to Aleksandar Vučić’s rule to date, is wrapping up its campaign today with a rally at Slavija Square. Emerging from the student protests, the SL is not a formal political party and has been described as an unusual political experiment. Regardless of the final outcome of the election, it is expected to receive a very large share of the vote.
The Student List consists largely of individuals selected by the students who were previously unknown to the wider public. This is not the case with Dejan Šoškić, a former Governor of the National Bank of Serbia (2010–2012) and a professor at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Economics. Ranked 27th on the list, Šoškić is guaranteed a seat in the next parliament. He has been a vocal critic of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) government, including its economic policies, long before the student protests began.
