Statement on Current Situation in Macedonia by Eduard Kukan, a Long Standing Eexpert on Western Balkans

Bratislava, 6. 02. 2015 – In light of the recent developments concerning the charges around Zoran Zaev, leader of the opposition Social Democratic Party, Eduard Kukan, Member of the European Peoples Party (EPP), a long standing expert on Western Balkans, and close follower of the events in Macedonia, currently serving his second mandate as a Member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, stated:

“It is with great concern that I have been following the recent developments in Macedonia. Tense relations between the governing party and the opposition have taken another turn for the worse, when the leader of the opposition party SDSM Zoran Zaev, was accused of undermining constitutional order.

I urge our partners in Macedonia to respect the most democratic principles such as a clear separation between party and state lines, and an independent judiciary that should take on politically sensitive investigations in a transparent manner.”
