BERN – Serbia will be ready for EU membership by 2020, Serbian PM Ana Brnabić told the Swiss paper Le Temps in an interview, dismissing criticism about media freedom in Serbia.

She recalled Serbia had an action plan under which reforms should be completed in 2020 or 2021.

“We are working hard to accomplish the plan and adapt to European legislation. The reforms are based on three pillars – the economy, administration and rule of law,” Brnabić said.

She described as encouraging a statement by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that Serbia is one of the front-runners in the EU accession process and that the EU could open its door to new members in 2025.

Brnabić dismissed criticism regarding media freedom.

“The media are completely free,” she said.

Like elsewhere, funding is the problem for media in Serbia, Brnabić noted.
