BRUSSELS- The European Commission is drawing up a proposal to redesign rules for new member states ahead of the European Council summit which will begin on 15 October, 2026, reports Politico. According to Politico’s “Brussels Playbook”, this overhaul addresses deep concerns among current member states regarding the risks of the enlargement.
The article stresses that some EU member states, including France, Germany and the Netherlands, having voiced opposition to rapid enlargement, “worrying that new members could change governments and block policies – as happened with Hungary under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Politico reminds that Montenegro is hoping to join the EU by 2028, with Ukraine and Moldova planning to follow behind, while Iceland is weighting up whether to restart the accession talks.
