BRUSSELS – The European Commission stated on Monday that any interference in Montenegro’s EU accession process would be unacceptable.
Responding to a questions from Vijesti about Prime Minister Spajić’s statement that the closing of negotiating chapters would be accompanied by hybrid activities, involving at least two countries from the region, the Commission stated that the EU was already supporting the Montenegrin authorities in addressing growing hybrid threats, including those aimed at disrupting the country’s European path.
“This support focus on strengthening democratic institutions, media resilience and media literacy, as well as cyber resilience”, European Commission said for Vijesti.
They added that it remained in close contact with the Montenegrin authorities and continued to closely monitor developments in order to support Montenegro’s stability and its path towards EU membership.
In his post on X, Spajić did not specify which two countries he was referring to. However, Montenegrin media reported that the two countries in question were Albania and Serbia.
Albania is not and cannot be part of any scenario aimed at destabilising Montenegro or any other country, said Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs on Friday.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić also reacted on Spajić’s statement .
“He did not name any country. I am certain that he was referring to Croatia, but I do not know which other country he meant. I am only interested in us becoming economically stronger and widening the gap. I am also interested in the Serbian people having the right to their language and flag, and nothing else concerns me,” said Vučić.
