PODGORICA – The announced closure of the new negotiating chapters with the European Union will be accompanied by coordinated “hybrid actions” involving officials from at least two countries in the region, announced Prime Minister of Montenegro Milojko Spajić on his X account today.
“We have serious security operational intelligence that the announced closure of new negotiating chapters will be accompanied by coordinated hybrid actions, involving officials from at least two countries in the region. According to our information, such activities aim to destabilise Montenegro, with expected support from certain political actors and parts of the media scene in our country”, Spajić wrote.
He added that the authorities were aware of these intentions and conscious of their goal.
“Attempts at destabilization will not change our course nor halt Montenegro’s European path, which is greater than the daily interests of any political structure”, Spajić wrote.
Earlier this week, local media in Montenegro learned that the EU was preparing a new, accelerated plan to complete accession negotiations with Montenegro, which envisages closing all remaining negotiating chapters by the end of this year and preparing the first draft of the Accession Treaty by the end of September.
Though Spajić did not name any country in his post, his comments come at a time when relations between Montenegro and Serbia have cooled down considerably on the political level.
Recently, Spajić was involved in a diplomatic spat with President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić, centred around several issues, including the treatment of ethnic Serbs in Montenegro, compliance with anti-Russian sanctions, and alleged geopolitical double standards of Serbia. Pro-government media in Serbia have intensively attacked Spajić in the following weeks.
