The shadow of Ratko Mladić looms over Serbia’s election campaign

Vučić has rarely mentioned Ratko Mladić himself, but rallies organised by the ruling party feature chants in support of Mladić and imagery depicting him.

The funeral of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić in Belgrade in early September took place just days before the snap parliamentary election, scheduled for 25 October, was called. While attitudes towards Mladić and the Srebrenica genocide have not been the main focus of the campaign, the issue has played a prominent supporting role throughout.

The funeral drew strong international criticism, particularly from EU institutions and several member states. Aleksandar Vučić, then still President of Serbia, did not attend the funeral, but several government officials did, and the event featured elements of state and military honours.
