Remarks by President Donald Tusk after his meeting with PM of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic

Donald Tusk

Good afternoon. Let me begin by saying how pleased I was to receive Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić here in Brussels today.

Serbia’s future in the European Union is important, for you and for us. Its progress has until now been demonstrated by a clear commitment, which Prime Minister Vucic has re-affirmed  to me today. Serbia needs to continue delivering on key reforms, including the rule of law and maintaining the momentum in the normalisation process.

We also discussed foreign and security challenges. I underlined the importance of Serbia’s foreign policy approach being guided by its number one strategic objective: to join the European Union. I expressed the EU’s expectation that Serbia progressively aligns with the European Union’s positions in the process up to accession.

Finally, I welcomed the Prime Minister’s political focus and efforts in building good neighbourly relations. His participation at today’s Western Balkan 6 Conference organised by Commissioners Hahn and Bulc highlights Serbia’s importance to the deepening of regional cooperation and connectivity. Thank you.
