NATO: Kosovo's army is its internal matter

NATO Headquarters

BELGRADE, 30.09.2015. (Tanjug) – NATO is not the one to decide on the structure, mandate and mission of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF), and the future of the KSF is an internal matter of the local Kosovo institutions, an unofficial NATO source has told the Danas daily.

BELGRADE – NATO is not the one to decide on the structure, mandate and mission of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF), and the future of the KSF is an internal matter of the local Kosovo institutions, an unofficial NATO source has told the Danas daily.

Kosovo’s Foreign Minister Hasim Taci said in New York on Tuesday that Kosovo is ready to set up the armed forces of Kosovo and that it has received NATO’s consent on the matter, adding that this now requires the consent of the Assembly of Kosovo.

According to a statement from Kosovo’s Foreign Ministry, Taci said this after a meeting with Todd Chapman, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs at the US Department of State.

However, the Western military alliance said that it currently supports the development of the KSF within its original mission and mandate through the NATO Liaison and Advisory Team.

Should the mandate and the mission of the force evolve, the North Atlantic Council will have to assess the level of NATO’s engagement, the Belgrade paper was told.
