BRUSSELS – We need to bring the Western Balkans to better life, to give perspectives to young people, to open the borders, stated the Member of the European Parliament, Tanja Fajon for Euronews.

As Bulgaria took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, it will organise the informal summit on the Western Balkans on May 17.

“If European leaders will not have this awareness of what is at stake, if they are promising enlargement but not delivering, then we can very quickly lose the region with instability, with economic instability, political instability. We see also growing nationalism somewhere and losing the young generation,” Fajon explained for Euronews.

She added that the EU needs to bring this region to better life, to give perspectives to young people and also to open the borders so that the region can live as good neighbours.

“It is about how to increase our credibility not only inside the region, but also as Europe as a whole towards the outside world,” Fajon said.
