BRUSSELS – Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, welcomes the constructive work done so far on a fundamental justice reform in Albania.
High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini has published the following statement:
Comprehensive and deep judicial reform has been a longstanding demand of an overwhelming majority of Albania’s citizens. It is also essential for the country’s next step towards integration with the EU.
The legislative proposal that is now before the Parliament reflects the recommendations by the Venice Commission and is fully in line with European standards. It is essential that the proposal is adopted by the required two-thirds majority.
This is a vote for which every member of Parliament of every political group bears particular responsibility. As I underlined in Parliament when I was in Tirana recently, it can be the start of a new chapter of our shared history. It can open the way for a new beginning, and this is why we expect all political forces to use tomorrow‘s final round of consultations to endorse the proposal.
We count on all our Albanian partners to demonstrate their commitment to this reform by adopting it and putting all their efforts into its implementation. Citizens of Albania expect their political leadership to deliver on this.
