BELGRADE – European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said today that Serbia will have to do more in the process of joining the European Union and that it remains to be seen how the future government will behave in this regard, it was reported by Beta news agency.
Presenting the European Commission’s plan for preparing the EU for future enlargement to the members of the Committee on the Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament (AFET), Kos underlined that Serbia is not among the most advanced countries that will receive special road maps in the EU accession process.
“Serbia will have to deliver more. We will see the seriousness of their government after the elections, whether they not only talk about wanting to be a member, but also work specifically on it, especially in terms of strategic alignment with the Common Foreign and Security Policy”, she clarified.
When it comes to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kos said that she hopes that the country will continue its EU path after the elections, provided that political leaders are serious about continuing this process.
“The road map only makes sense if the car is moving; it does not make sense when it is standing still,” Kos said, adding that “the reforms are the main fuel for the engine that drives the car”.
Yesterday, Marta Kos presented to the public five steps on enlargement policy that the EU should discuss in the future. As she specified, the aim of the European Commission’s proposals is “to answer the question of how to prepare for the stronger Europe we want to be tomorrow”.
