France wants chapters opened as soon as possible

TANJUG_maliBELGRADE – France wants the chapters of the accession talks between Serbia and the EU opened in order to monitor the modernisation of the Serbian economy and institutions, French State Secretary for European Affairs Harlem Desir has told the daily Vecernje novosti, adding that Serbia is moving strongly towards EU membership.

Desir also supported Serbia by taking part in the Friends of Serbia meeting in Brussels on Monday, the daily said.

Serbia plays a very important role in the stability of the Western Balkans, Desir stated when asked to comment on Belgrade’s achievements so far.

He could not give an precise date for the opening of the chapters of the accession talks, explaining that such decisions were made collectively within the EU, but that France thought the sooner the better.

In any case, a number of chapters should be opened by the end of the year and France is in constant touch with the European Commission concerning the issue, he pointed out.
