European Commission: Croatia and Slovenia to implement an arbitration judgement

The European Commission expects Slovenia and Croatia to enforce the arbitral tribunal’s ruling on the delimitation, the Vice-President of the Commission Frans Timmermans said today.

The commission is ready to provide assistance in the implementation of the verdict, Timmermans said, STA reports.

After discussing the arbitral tribunal’s decision, the Commission announced that it was ready to provide assistance in the comprehensive and fair enforcement of the judgment.

“The commission is ready to contribute or facilitate this process,” Timmermans told reporters.

According to him, the EC welcomes the meeting of the Prime Ministers of Slovenia and Croatia, Mire Cerar and Andrej Plenkovic, scheduled for July 12, as well as their agreement that there will be no pre-sided actions.

Timmermans expressed hope that the two prime ministers will agree on how best to implement the verdict.

In his Twitter account, Cerar welcomed the Commission’s call for a verdict.

“The Commission’s offer to contribute to the application is welcome,” he wrote.

By the decision of the Arbitral Tribunal, which was announced on Friday in The Hague, Slovenia received three-quarters of the Piran Bay, as well as a free corridor through Croatian territorial waters that connect them with international waters.

Croatia left the arbitration process in the summer of 2015 after Slovenian representatives were caught trying to lobby the judges.

Since then, the Croatian authorities have argued that the arbitration process is no longer worth them, and therefore will not respect the court’s decision
