TIRANA – Germany will recognize the June 18 parliamentary elections in Albania even if they are to be held without the centre-right opposition, German Ambassador to Albania, Susanne Schütz, stated on Tuesday, ATA reports.
“The German government is willing to recognize the June 18 elections even if they are to be held without the participation of the Democratic Party. We hope for the elections to take place on the date set by the President of the Republic. We also wish to see as many political parties as possible participate in the polls. If the Democratic Party and other parties in opposition keep on insisting not to participate in the electoral process this is a sad decision, but we will recognize the elections,” German diplomat told reporters after attending a signing ceremony at the Ministry of Energy in Tirana.
Few days ago, U.S. Ambassador Donald Lu also made said that “U.S. will recognize the election outcome even without the opposition’s participation.”
In an interview with Voice of America last week, the U.S. diplomat noted that all factors were working to ensure that opposition runs in the elections, but the process could be recognized as legitimate even without the opposition’s participation.
