Davenport: EU,donors, countries need to work together closely

Michael Davenport

BELGRADE – Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport Monday commended everyone in Serbia for the way they treat refugees and said that he believed that a forthcoming meeting in Luxembourg would be marked with setting up a new fund to help the countries that refugees from the Middle East were passing through.

Speaking at a meeting on the migrant crisis in Belgrade, Davenport stressed the need for close cooperation between the European Union, international donors and countries refugees are passing through, especially bearing in mind that winter is coming.

Davenport said that we needed to be flexible in planning, as the number of refugees was expected to increase in the future.

The EU will continue to show genuine solidarity with the countries in the Western Balkans, including Serbia. I wish to underline the EU’s willingness to continue providing concrete assistance, he said.

Davenport emphasized the importance of the forthcoming meeting in Luxembourg, where he expects the participants, including representatives of Serbia, to make a joint declaration dealing with assistance to countries that refugees are passing through.
