Joint statement by the HR/VP Mogherini and Commissioner Hahn on the Anniversary Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide

Potočari graveyard near Srebrenica

Twenty one years ago, one of the darkest pages of our history was written:  the Srebrenica genocide  is  a wound  still open in the heart of Europe. On the day of commemorating the 21st anniversary of the  massacre of 11 July 1995, our thoughts are with the families of many who suffered and lost their lives. It is a common duty of Europe and of the international community to remember so that such a tragedy, a  shame for the humankind, could not happen again.

Twenty one years after this tragedy, last victims still need to be buried with dignity. There is pain still to be healed and justice still to be served. All those responsible for the massacre must be held accountable.

This commemoration reminds us to learn from the past in order to build a prosperous future for all citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is also a call for unity among the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina and their political leadership.

We will continue supporting Bosnia and Herzegovina’s efforts to move forward in order to promote the well-being of the citizens through socio-economic reform, good governance and justice for all, advancing on its path towards the European Union.
