BUDAPEST – News that an agreement had been signed for Hungary’s MOL to acquire the majority Russian-owned stake in Serbia’s oil company NIS drew widespread attention after caretaker Finance Minister Siniša Mali made the announcement in an interview with Bloomberg Adria TV.
However, MOL told N1 that there had been no change regarding the transaction, while the Finance Ministry subsequently clarified that Mali had been referring to an agreement signed between MOL Group and the Serbian government in June 2026.
“There has been no change regarding the transaction that would require us to notify the capital markets. Should any relevant developments arise, we will provide information without delay, in accordance with applicable regulations,” MOL Serbia said in response to N1’s request for comment on Mali’s statement earlier today about the signing of an agreement to sell NIS to MOL Group.
In the interview with Bloomberg Adria TV earlier today, Mali also said that a written agreement had been reached with the Hungarian side for Serbia to increase its stake in NIS from 30% to 35%, eKapija reported. European Western Balkans also reported his remarks.
On 17 June 2026, MOL Group announced that it had signed a shareholders’ agreement with the Serbian government establishing the future governance framework for NIS.
