Spain ratified accession protocol

MADRID / PODGORICA – The Senate (the upper house) of the Spanish Parliament approved Montenegro’s NATO Accession Protocol on Wednesday, thus completing the ratification procedure in the country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

In this way, Spain has become the 27th member of the alliance, which has confirmed the accession protocol.

The national procedure has been completed in the Netherlands as well. After the 1 June deadline for the act to enter into force expires, the process of ratification in all NATO member states will be formally completed.

After that, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is to send an invitation letter to Montenegro to join NATO.

According to the ministry, by depositing the ratification instrument, which is scheduled for 5 June, Montenegro will formally become a NATO member state.
